International Mother Language Day, proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference on November 17, 1999, has been celebrated annually since 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.

The date was chosen to honor events in Dhaka (now the capital of Bangladesh) on February 21, 1952, when students demonstrated in defense of their mother tongue, Bengali, which they demanded be recognized as one of the national languages of the country, and were shot and killed by police officers. Languages are the strongest instrument of preserving and developing our material and spiritual heritage. According to the UN, there are about 7,000 languages in the world, of which over 2,500 are endangered, i.e. may soon lose their last speakers. One language disappears every two weeks, taking with it an entire cultural and intellectual heritage.

All steps to promote mother tongues serve not only to promote linguistic diversity and multilingual education, to develop a better knowledge of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world, but also to strengthen solidarity based on mutual understanding, tolerance and dialogue.

Every year, Mother Language Day celebrations take place in different countries, focusing on a particular theme and aiming to promote respect as well as the promotion and protection of all languages (especially endangered languages), linguistic diversity and multilingualism. Thus, over the years, the Day has been devoted to the following themes: the links between the mother tongue and multilingualism, particularly in education; Braille and sign language; raising awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions based on mutual understanding, tolerance and dialogue; safeguarding the intangible heritage of humanity and preserving cultural diversity; the role of the language of instruction in schools, etc.


Ukrainian language courses are specially created for international students who want to communicate freely with fellow students during their studies and be able to explain themselves to the teachers. At the end of the course, all students receive the basic communication and writing skills that will make life in Ukraine much easier. The course lasts for three months and runs parallel to the main course of study.
By taking this course, students make new friends and learn about the history and culture of Ukraine. Knowledge of Ukrainian language will greatly enrich not only personal communication but also educational opportunities. Students learn correct pronunciation, reading, translation and comprehension of spoken language, overcome language barriers and improve their speaking skills, as well as learn grammar.

After successful completion of the course, students will be able to use Ukrainian in various life situations, read and understand publications in Ukrainian, confidently communicate and correspond with friends and colleagues, and study at Ukrainian-language universities without studying at the preparatory department, which will reduce the total period of study by one year.
